Tips for using Instax and Polaroid cameras during weddings

Every once in a while we come across posts on social media where brides ask for advice regarding using Instax and Polaroid cameras during weddings. Instant photos produced by Instax and Polaroid are seen as a budget-friendly alternative to hiring a photobooth. After all, guests can take funny and spontaneous photos which they can either take home, stick into the guest book or hang on a photo wall at the party venue.

There is definitely something magical about snapping a picture and seeing the image slowly appear on a white piece of paper. For some of us, this experience takes us back to the days when film had to be developed and photos were printed in a darkroom. Many experiences, which were previously considered science fiction, are now taken for granted, however people hearing the instantly recognisable sound of a print coming out of an Instax or a Polaroid camera cannot resist the temptation of watching a blank sheet turn into a tangible memory.

We have seen our share of Instax and Polaroid photos taken during parties and 99% of them are not something you would want to give to your guests as keepsakes or stick into an album with your wedding photos. The truth is, Instax and Polaroid cameras work best when lighting conditions are near perfect (preferably outside with lots of natural light). When it comes to parties, the built in flashes of these consumer cameras are simply not powerful enough to provide sufficient light which is critical for good photo quality.

Therefore today's tips:

  • If you are planning on using Instax or Polaroid cameras during your wedding, we recommend that the cameras are placed on tables outside so that your guests can take photos after the ceremony and before the dinner or party, before it gets dark.
  • Make sure you print out and frame instructions on using the cameras and replacing paper cartridges.
  • Be prepared to see just a few photos in your photobox or your guest book at the end of the evening. Many guests will take their photo memories home as a souvenir from your special day.
  • Instax or Polaroid cameras can be fun, but unfortunately due to their significant technical limitations they cannot replace a high-quality photobooth with studio lighting and a backdrop.
